Universal Products Corporation was founded in 1916 and established a plant on East Woodbridge Street in Detroit, before moving to 6455 Kingsley Street in Dearborn in 1921. The principal product produced by the company was a cross type universal joint for the automobile industry.The 60,000 sq. ft. plant was expanded in 1929.
By 1955, the company was selling 85% of its product, which included auto crankshafts as well as universal joints to Chrysler. That same year Chrysler bought the company and renamed it Chrysler's Detroit Universal Division. Chrysler closed the plant in 1978. It is now part of the Dearborn Steel Center.
