  • This is a wonderful city park in Sherman, Texas. I spent many hours here as a child in the 50's. We played baseball nearly every day. It seemed every child that lived on the south end of town came to play. We only went home for a little while if we were hungry or thirsty, then back to play until the lightning bugs came out. Everyone always had to be home by dark, so we all ran like the dickens to get home and not get in trouble. Ely Park has small monuments every few feet bordering the park. I believe they were placed there to honor the military men who died in World War II and were from Sherman, perhaps Grayson County. As a child, I just knew they were soldiers and I would spend hours going around the block reading every soldier's name and thanking him. Since I am not entirely sure of who these men were, only that I honored them then and now, I plan to research the placement of these monuments. I will write more when I find out their story. Go to Ely Park. Take your kids. Play some ball. Be sure to be home by dark!
  • You are correct about the markers. One of those markers bears the name of my uncle and the park is named after Capt. E.F. Ely, a Sherman historical figure and my great grandfather!
