Romanesque Tower (Ladenburg)

Germany / Baden-Wurttemberg / Ladenburg
 tower, Romanesque (architecture)

The tower is in its foundations Carolingian. The intermediate building to the choir dates from the 10th Century. It is clad with Romanesque blind arches. Strikingly are the two Carolingian spolia that have been used as a pillar and a pillar base. The roof is from the 13th Century and calles a “Worsmer Hut” (Wormser Hat). Its octagonal shape indicates Eastern oriental influences(crusades). The apotropaic grimaces on the northwest edge of the tower and at the base of the arches show great similarity to images on the Bayeux Tapestry and the Peel Castle on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.
The place is located in St. Sebastian's Chapel
