Path of the New Irvington Tunnel, which is currently under construction. The tunnel is part of the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct Water System Improvement Program. Once completed, the tunnel will be 3.5 miles long with an internal diameter of 8.5 feet. The new tunnel, which runs parallel to the existing tunnel built between 1928 and 1930, provides a seismically strengthened path for delivering water to San Francisco.
Construction began on August 26, 2010, and complete Nov. 2015.
