In 1896, Franklin Hiram Walker, the son of distiller, Hiram Walker, built, on this site, a two and one half story Neo-Jacobean mansion designed by George Mason Co., architects. Walker was the president of Hiram Walker & Sons and lived at what is now 2730 East Jefferson Avenue until 1912, when the house was purchased by the Michigan Workmen's Compensation Mutual Insurance Company, which converted it into a hospital.

The Manufacturers Mutual Hospital was dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured workers and operated until 1953. At that time the greatly expanded Hospital was sold and became known as Doctor's Hospital. The 110 bed, Doctor's Hospital closed its doors in 1980.

Vacant for a number of years, the buildings were demolished shortly after the property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. A small shopping plaza, which includes a Staples was later erected on the site
