"Private Passage" (2005) by Malcolm Cochran (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York
sculpture, interesting place, big thing (attraction)

Site-specific sculpture by Malcolm Cochran which provides a clever nod not only to his own experience, but to the glory days of luxury liner cruising that once dominated the travel industry in New York. Cochran's idea evolved from doing a model of an ocean liner to putting that inside a bottle, like a ship in a bottle. This distinctive sculpture consists of a 30’ x 8’6” wine bottle resting on its side, within which is a representation and interpretation of the interiors taken from a stateroom of the original ocean liner, RMS Queen Mary (which first sailed in 1936).

The exterior of the bottle is fabricated of bronze and zinc with a traditional green patina. The interior of the bottle is fashioned from sheet metal and other materials in a monochromatic scheme evoking the look of a platinum print from a black and white photograph.

It is located at Pier 94 at the Clinton Cove at West 55th Street and Hudson River Park
