Pfeiffer Brewing was founded in 1892 by German immigrant Conrad Pfeiffer. By 1914 the brewery was producing 100,000 barrels of beer. With the repeal of Prohibition, new owners invested in new construction and better equipment and by 1935 production reached 200,000 barrels. Continued modernization in the 1940s and 1950s increased capacity to 250,000 barrels.

Notwithstanding its success, Pfeifer remained a small regional brewer in an industry that was becoming increasingly national in scope. In an effort to expand, Pfeifer combined with a number of other local breweries in Indiana, Minnesota and elsewhere in 1962 to form Associated Brewing Company. In 1966 the Detroit brewery was closed as sales of Pfiefer beer were not sufficient to keep the plant opened. Pfiefer could be more economically brewed in Indiana.

Despite these efforts, Associated Brewing went out of business in 1972 and the assets were sold to G Heileman.
