The 21 acre cemetery was established in 1868 by Trinity Lutheran Church, shortly after it was founded as the first Missouri Synod Lutheran Church in Detroit in 1850. By 1866 a wooden frame chapel was constructed on Larned Street before a large red brick church at Gratiot and Rivard was dedicate in 1866 at a time when there was a substantial ethnic German community located along Gratiot Avenue.
