  • Towards the end of December 1989 I was travelling by train from Mumbai to Trivandrum to join my new job. I was reading the month's Reader's Digest to pass time during the long though interesting trip through Kerala which I was visiting for the first time. It so happened that I was reading the Reader's Digest article on the Perumon train accident precisely when my train was passing over the very bridge across Ashtamudi Lake on which the accident occurred a year earlier. Little could I guess that this journey presaged another event that would be linked with the tragedy. Within a fortnight after joining my new job, I fixed up a house on lease basis so that my family could join me there. Lo and behold my surprise, when I learnt from my new landlord that his elder son died in that tragic accident when he was travelling by train to appear for an interview for a job in the railways ! The scenic Ashtamudi Lake and the tragic accident have always been in my memory as the lone sad aspect during my otherwise enjoyable stay of 5 years in clean and green Kerala.
