Munroe Island is located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Kayal and the Kallada River, in kollam district, Kerala South India; it is a tourism destination. The serene place is named in memory of Resident late Colonel John Munro of the erstwhile Princely state of Travancore. This island is surrounded by Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake. It is also known as Munroothuruthu, Manrothuruthu and Munroethuruth. it is situated at a distance of 25 km from Kollam by road. It is 71 km by road from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) airport. The place is surrounded by Kallada River & Lake Ashtamudi and is accessible by road, rail and inland water navigation. The island village is a tourism friendly village where one can watch coir retting process, coir weaving, fishing, prawns feeding, migratory bird watch, narrow canals and waterways, coconut farms on the lake shore, lagoons, kandal plants and the beautiful tiny islands of Pathupara. The island measures 13.4 sq.km .
History
In 1795 the British established their supremacy in South India and Kerala came under their governance.From 1800 onwards, in order to maintain British Supremacy in Kerala, a Resident was appointed by the British Administrative head. The First Resident was Colonel Collin Macaulay followed by Colonel John Munro. During Munro’s time a senior priest of the Malankara Sabha, Pulikottil Joseph Kathanar expressed his desire to establish seminary for training priests and a place to settle the newly converted Christians. Thus the place was named after Colonel John Munro by the locals and is still known as Munroethuruth.
The history of muroe island is connected with the history of Church Missionary Society. During the reign of rani parvathi Gowri Bhai of Travancore. She had good relations ship with the CMS. CMS came as a mission of Help. That is the Syrian church existed in the land was in the verge of ruin due to the lack of good leadership and real spiritual guidance. rani gave munroe thruthu to CMS to meet the "KEROSINE EXPENCE" of the syrian students of old seminary situated in Kottaym.CMS liberated the slaves which was under the nair madambis of kallada. They have invited local syrians to act as servants. When they denied they are given opportunity to help them in translation and evangelisation. later CMS brought people from central part of travancore and settled them there. . Due to good relation and high educational quality CMS was in good terms with the Kallada mukkadavil family. They had 40 acres of land in the island. The sons of Thommi of kallada mukkadavil family was very much attracted to the mission and later some of them sent to different parts of Central Kerala for evangelistic work. Rev. C Thomas,the first missionary of ELANTHOOR MISSION started by the CMS and Atmopakari Rev. T Koshy etc.. were some among them.
