The lined ponds are owned by Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The drying beds are pumped full of liquid sludge (wastewater treatment process residuals) and allowed to air-dry in order to consolidate the biosolids into a 'cake'. The dried solids are then scraped together into piles by heavy machinery and transported off-site to be landfilled, incinerated or composted.
