Residential complex completed in 1974, consisting of three 39-story towers, totaling 1,300 units. Designed by Oppenheimer, Brady & Vogelstein with Barry Goldsmith as project designer in the brutalist style, Independence Plaza was one one of the first new residential projects in the area.

Originally composed mainly of low and middle-income tenants, Independence Plaza has since been renovated to luxury apartments. Tenants in Independence Plaza had generally been shielded from the soaring prices in the neighborhood due to its enrollment in the Mitchell Lama program. But since the landlord opted out of the program in 2003, units have gradually gone market-rate as existing tenants have left their apartments.
