4-story residential building completed in 1822 as a 3-story building for William Schermerhorn. It was raised to four stories In 1873, as indicated by the unusually wide distance between the 3rd & 4th floors. The peaked roof of this building was also lowered at that time. The original red Flemish bond brickwork of the 2nd and 3rd floors has been retained. At the much-altered ground floor, remnants of the keyed brownstone door enframement remain at the southern bay. At the upper floors, some of the brownstone window lintels and sills are still in place. The 4th-story addition of the 1870s is terminated by a retardataire dentiled brick cornice. The building was renovated into apartments as part of the Historic Front Street 2005 re-development project. The ground floor is occupied by Barbalu restaurant, which shares the ground floor space with 227 Front Street next door.
