apartment building, commercial building
90-foot, 10-story Beaux-Arts residential building completed in 1924. Designed by E. Polk, it is clad in light-brown brick above a rusticated limestone ground floor. The entrance is at the center of the facade, next to a small plate-glass storefront with a blue canvas awning. The entrance has glass double-doors covered by a rounded, red canvas canopy extending out over the sidewalk. To the west is a restaurant space with a wide show-window, a smaller window, and a glass door, and a metal service door at the west end. To the east is another restaurant space with a glass door, a large window, two smaller windows, and a recessed metal service door.
The upper floors are symmetrical, with a light court recessed above the central entrance, dividing the rest of the facade into two wings. Both wings have six single-windows per floor; at the 2nd floor they have full stone surrounds with intricate lintels at the top, featuring small cartouches, topped by small cornices. The 3rd floor has smaller and simpler stone surrounds, and the other floors have plain openings. A modillioned band course sets off the 8th floor, which has narrow brick pilasters grouping the windows of the 8th-9th floors. The windows are separated by carved terra-cotta spandrels between the floors decorated with large medallions, and the 9th-floor windows are topped by round-arches with shields and keystones.
The rear south-facing wall of the light well has two single-windows flanked by double-windows, and the inward-facing side walls of the light well have two bays of single-windows. The band course continue across the base of the 8th floor, and the full facade is capped at the 9th floor by a stone cornice with paired brackets with carved lion's heads above each pair.
The penthouse level on the 10th floor is set back all each side, and has bays of single-windows. The building contains 107 apartment units. The ground floor is occupied by New York Luncheonette, RJ Hair Salon, and Chef Guo restaurant.
