The Wilpattu National Park (131,693 Ha / 325,420 Acre) is the largest of the over 20 Sri-Lanka's Wildlife Sanctuaries.

The Wilpattu (Villu-pattu: Land of Lakes) National Park (since 1938) in Sri Lanka is also famous as a good place for leopard watching. Leopards are more visible in parts of Sri Lanka than many places where they share their habitat with dominant competitors.

The villus or big rainwater reservoirs are very common in this part of the island.

Cooper Red Soils can be found in the park, the island's name is due to this phenomenon and was first called by Vijaya (First King of Sri-Lanka, 543-504 BC) "Tambapanni" that means "cooper-colored".

Preferred Visit Period: February - October.
