McGee's Pub (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 55th Street, 240
pub / public house, commercial building, Irish pub

4-story commercial building completed in 1869 as a townhouse. It is clad in red brick, with a red and black metal, wood, and glass storefront on the ground floor, and iron piers framing the lower two floors that are painted bright red, black, and beige. There is a studio window at the 2nd floor, topped by transoms with black and beige diamond shapes in panels on a red background, and a decorative lintel caps the 2nd floor.

The two upper floors have simpler studio windows with white metal framing. A projecting, vertical sign is mounted near the left edge of the facade at the 2nd-3rd floors. A simple stone coping caps the roof line. On the east facade, the front has a studio window on the 2nd floor, also with decoratively colored transoms, and thee is a vertical pier to the left, matching those on the front facade. The 2nd-floor lintel from the front also carries onto this part of the east elevation. The 3rd & 4th floors have paired windows. Farther back, there are two tiny, square windows at the upper floors, followed by four bays of single-windows. At the 2nd floor the northern two of these bays have double- and triple-windows with red and black framing. The building is occupied by McGee's Pub, which is the inspiration for McLaren's Bar in the TV show How I Met Your Mother.
