office building, Gothic revival (architecture), commercial building
180-foot, 16-story Neo-Gothic office building completed in 1926. Designed by Green & Evans, it is clad in brown brick above a 3-story grey granite base which has been refaced from its original intention. The double-height, central entrance has brass-and-glass double-doors with sidelights, recessed between white-painted, angled side walls, and a black granite upper wall section that angled back and down to the doors. Silver metal numbers "48" are affixed to the black granite section above the doors. There are metal-and-glass storefronts on either side of the entrance. The 2nd & 3rd floors have five bays of three windows, recessed in metal frames, except for the middle bay at the 2nd floor, where the entrance extends up into it. At the other four bays there are fluted, grey-brown metal spandrels between the floors at each window.
The upper floors also have five bays of three windows, with brick lintels. The main piers between the bays have narrow, angled brick projections running up them. The end bays (and the outer window of the next bays) set back above the 8th floor, and the next two windows set back above the 9th & 10th floors, respectively; the middle bay also sets back above the 10th floor. The setbacks at the end bays and the middle bay are marked by Gothic stone capitals on the piers and varied carved ornament above the windows. Finials topping the piers at the setbacks of the windows in the intermediate bays were removed in 2012, replaced by plain tan brick.
Above the center bay's first setback, there are angled side walls, each with a single-window, up to another setback above the 13th floor. The outer bays have setbacks above the 11th & 14th floors. The upper center-bay setback, and the roof line at the center bay, are crowned with finials.
There are also three setbacks across the rear, south-facing facade, which is clad in beige brick. The west elevation is clad in brown brick with horizontal stripes of lighter brick at the upper floors. There are seven bays of single-windows, with the front two dropping off at the setbacks. There is a mechanical penthouse at the center of the roof, and a round water tower at the west side.
The ground floor is occupied by Mr. Sun Chinese restaurant, Kitchen Paradise restaurant, and DELIS 48 restaurant.
