Pewabic Pottery was founded by Mary Chase Stratton in 1903 as part of the arts and crafts movement. She developed a series of irridescent glazes which she used in her work. Tiles and ornamental made by Pewabic Pottery were used in many notable buildings and homes constructed before the Great Depression. Among the notable installations are the Nebraska State Capitol, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.

The studio was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
