The Villa Romana was acquired in 1905 by Max Klinger for 60,000 gold liras. Klinger then arranged for the German Künstlerbund where artists stayed, in particular the scholars of the Villa Romana Prize. In 1906 in Leipzig, the Villa Romana club, founded by Klinger, earned the Künstlerhaus Villa Romana.
