Built over a two-year period during the early 1950's, the "Q" Area of the Seneca Army Depot was one of nineteen special weapons storage areas in the United States. Consisting of 64 storage igloos, some which were built to resist nuclear blasts, the Q area was surrounded by a triple-fence perimeter which had its center fence electrified to 4,800 volts.

Operating as a totally separate entity of the depot, the Q Area was actively patrolled by its own specially trained force of Military Police and soon became home to what is thought to be the largest stockpile of US Army tactical Nuclear Weapons in United States. Deactivated and drawn down following the end of the Cold War and its subsequent arms limitation treaties, the Q Area was finally idled with the closure of the Seneca Army Depot in 2000.

  • It has since been confirmed that Q area was, indeed, the storage area for nuclear weapons and parts.
