Jerome Berg is the winningest football coach in Mayville State history. He grew up in Hatton, N.D., played football for former Mayville State coach Lewy Lee and succeeded Lee as coach of the Comets in 1956. In his fourth season, Berg's team won the conference championship for the first time since 1940. In 1961, his team was one of 25 undefeated teams in the nation. In 11 years, Berg's teams won six championships. In addition to coaching football, Berg also coached wrestling, basketball, and track at various times during his tenure at Mayville State, which ended in 1975. Berg continues to live in Mayville and provides active support for Mayville State University.He has been a key leader in raising funds for athletic scholarships. He created the Farmers Bowl weekend and led efforts to ensure the success of the annual event.
