Known as the Knauf Block, the three-story commercial building was completed in 1874 by baker Adam Knauf. It is a contributing property to the Mass Ave and Chatham Arch Historic Districts, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Metro has been the main tenant in the building since it opened on December 31, 1990.
