archaeological site, ancient civilization, ancient ruins
The site of ancient Gytheion, the main port of Ancient Laconia and the Spartan state. It served as a naval base of Sparta and the Peloponnesian League during the Peloponnesian War. In 455 BC the fleet was destroyed by the Athenians, and after 371 BC the area was ravaged by the Thebans. Gytheion passed to the Achaean League in 195 BC, later under Roman rule from 146 BC. Most visible ruins date to the Roman period. The most notable remains are of the theater.
