The castle of Acronafplia was mainly constructed by the Venetians. It is built on a long peninsula, which was previously connected to the mainland only by an isthmus. In Acronafplia Iioannis Kapodistrias built a military hospital and church and later the hospital became a prison for criminal and political prisoners. In the years of George I Acronafplia became a barracks and a military prison, and later, simply a prison. In 1970 the prison was shattered and the well known hotel XENIA PALACE was build.
