Brady's tunnel was opened in 1885 by the B&O Railroad. Construction went less than smoothly, with two abandoned starts in 1853 and 1873 and a riot between Italian and black diggers in 1884. The tunnel has seen a few accidents, the worst being a 1901 head-on train collision that killed at least three and injured several more.
