radioactive, nuclear reactor, notable by news
Three Mile Island Unit 2. This is the reactor core that suffered a partial core meltdown in 1979. The contamination is contained and the buildings are stable, but almost one third the core had melted down and the accident caused over 100,000 people to voluntarily evacuate the immediate area for several days. Some have characterized the accident as "30 minutes from disaster" because of the extent of the high temperatures reached in the core, the extent of the meltdown and the slow response of operators to get cooling water flowing again to the core. Cleanup of the substantial contamination was completed in 1993.
