This is the site of the SL-1 (Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One) experimental nuclear reactor, and associated accident. On the evening of January 3, 1961 the reactor's central control rod was withdrawn too far. The reactor went prompt critical, resulting in a steam explosion that killed the 3 operators on site.
