Tongan Consulate & UN Mission

USA / New Jersey / West New York / East 51st Street, 250
consulate / consular section / consul residence, diplomatic / foreign mission / representation

6-story postmodern consulate building originally completed in 1902 but given a new facade in 1984. It is clad in red-orange brick with a single bay of round-arched windows on the 2nd-5th floors, consisting of two full panes in the centers, bordered by smaller panes making up the edges of the arches at the sides and tops. The full span of the arches have brick lintels, and concrete sills make up the bottom edge.

The ground floor has recessed glass doors at the ends, separated by a semi-circular section in the center that is faced in a grid of small square windows in black metal framing; at the west end, the grid gives way to brick cladding in a stair-step manner. The top floor has a full circular window in place of the arches on the other floors. A projecting flagpole is mounted at the center of the facade, above the 3rd floor. The exposed east elevation is faced in plain concrete with a bay of single-windows at the front edge, and another near the center.

The building now houses the Consulate and Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Tonga to the United Nations.
