German-speaking theatre in Timişoara was mentioned for the first time in the 18th century. The city owns the bloom of the vivid theatre scene during this time the travelling theatre groups from Berlin, Vienna and Pest. In 1758 a theatre hall was set up in the building of the Serbian magistrate, financed by civic funds. The hall was especially created for this purpose. On the 22nd September 1875 the curtain in the new Franz-Josef-Theatre Timişoara was lifted for the first time. This prestigious building shapes the heart of today’s Timişoara and accommodates – unique in Europe – a Romanian, a Hungarian and a German language theatre and the National Opera House Timişoara.
