office building, chapel, Episcopal Church
11-story office building completed in 1963. Designed by Adams & Woodbridge, it is clad in limestone and concrete. The east facade along the avenue is six bays wide, with the ground floor recessed behind an arcade of square piers and segmental-arches. The three northern bays have glass infill and the main entrance. The three southern bays have each have white marble walls with a pair of 3-over-1 panels of veined black marble. The piers extend up to the 10th-floor setback, with each bay having angled piers (pointed at the bottoms at the 2nd floor) dividing narrow single-windows in grey metal frames.
The south facade on 43rd Street is white marble at the ground floor, with a freight entrance and metal service door at the west end. The upper floors have have matching angled piers to those on the east facade, dividing 15 windows on each floor. The set-back top floor also has projecting, angled piers. The north elevation is a blank, tan brick wall.
The mission of the Episcopal Church Foundation is to strengthen the leadership and financial capabilities of Episcopal congregations, dioceses, and related organizations to pursue their mission and ministry. The ground floor is occupied by Midtown Hardware.
