tree, place with historical importance
The Jack London Oak Tree sits in Frank Ogawa Plaza outside of the Oakland city hall. The tree is Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) and was planted by the widow of Jack London, Charmian London, in 1917 a year after his death. The area was renovated in 1994 planned by the design firm PGAdesign in order to better serve the health of the tree. The oak tree is the symbol of Oakland.
