The Blakely

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 55th Street, 136

180-foot, 16-story hotel completed in 1930. Designed by Schwartz & Gross, it opened as the Gorham Hotel. It is clad in reddish-brown brick laid in various patterns, above a ground floor of black-painted stone, four bays wide. The main entrance is at the east end, with glass double-doors set in a double-height stone molding topped by a round-arch; a rounded, blue canvas canopy extends from the arch out onto the sidewalk. The middle two bays have storefronts each with four tall windows, and the west bay has a storefront entrance next to a service door enclosed behind a projecting metal cage.

The 2nd floor has triple-windows in the three west bays (the entry arch extends up to the 2nd floor at the east), with planters boxes at their bases, and steep blue canvas awnings on top. Below the stone sills of the 3rd floor windows is patterned brickwork and black metal air-conditioning vents. The three middle piers are decorated with projecting brick chevrons, and the two piers framing the east bay are topped with stone capitals.

The upper floors all have triple-windows with stone sills and vents below them. Those on the 3rd floor have steep blue canvas awnings, and a pair of projecting flagpoles are mounted at the top of the 3rd floor. The three middle piers angle outward from the 3rd floor to the roof line. The spandrels at the two middle bays alternate simple brick panels with diagonal bricks with plus shapes of protruding brick at every other floor. The two middle bays also have vertically-laid brick lintels. The outer bays set back above the 13th floor, and again above the 14th. The middle bays have a series of shallower setback from the 14th-16th floors.Near the front of the roof is a brick-clad water tower enclosure, while there is a chimney at the west side, and an elevator penthouse at the southeast corner.

The east and west elevations are clad in tan brick with all the window openings filled in. The rear, south-facing facade is clad in tan brick and has four bays of triple-windows. The top half of this facade angles very slightly back to the roof line. A large metal pipe runs down the facade near the west end.

The hotel contains 119 guest rooms.
