This is the lease boundary for Lease 2484 which covers Deposit #1 and will be the first deposit mined. The Mary River desposits were discovered in 1962 by Murray Watts, who was head of Ungava British Explorations Ltd,Baffinland's predecessor. He flew over the site in a Cessna and discovered 4 massive iron ore deposits, which turned out to 65-70% pure. “You didn’t have to be a genius to discover this thing,” Gordon McCreary, Baffinland’s CEO from 2004 to 2010, was quoted as saying in 2006. “You fly over the top, you see all that black stuff and quite likely your compass would be spinning in circles.” After Watts died in 1982 he was inducted into the Mining Hall of Fame in 1989 for his many mineral discoveries in Nunavut, Quebec and Northwest Territories.
Deposit No. 1 has a 2500m strike length with a high quality lumpand fine iron ore that is 57.5-70% pure and ore requires only crushing before shipment, no jigging, processing, or cleaning. It has the potential of 365 Mt of Reserves, with 160 Mt @ 64.4% Fe, and Probably of 205 Mt @ 64.9% Fe. Due to this resource it is estimated the can produce 18 Mt of ore ayear with a life of mine of 20 years or more. The total capital expenditure is estimated at C$4.1 billion.
The crushed ore will be shipped by rail to a port at Steensby Inlet, about 145 km away It will take six trains a day for 300 days a year to move the ore to the port. The project will operate with fly-in, fly-out camps for employees, contractors, and other project personnel. The normal work rotation will be based on 12-hour workdays and a 2-week on, 2-weeks off, schedule. There will be accommodation complexes at both the Steensby port site and the Mary River mine site. Personnel based at the port site will be transferred from the Mary River airstrip to Steensby by passenger train. Once the mine is in full operation the employment estimate is set at between 400-500 people on-site at the Mary River project at any given time.
