Revlon Building (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Madison Avenue, 625
office building, 1930_construction, historical layer / disappeared object, commercial building

204-foot, 16-story modernist office building originally completed in 1930 as a 10-story building. Designed by Sloan & Robertson, it had six additional floors added in 1957, designed by Sylvan & Robert Bien, and was later re-clad in 1988 to a modern glass curtain wall design by Der Scutt Architects.

The facades feature bands of rose-tinted glass (in two separate tones) with darker glass spandrels, above a 2-story base of stone, metal, and glass. The double-height main entrance is at the center of the west facade on the avenue, with five bays of glass infill separated by four columns of red polished granite that widen to geometric capitals at the tops. The center bay has a window wall, flanked by revolving doors and traditional glass doors in the next bays. The outer bays of this middle section have storefronts on the ground floor, and more glass infill at the 2nd. Continuing outward, there are wider bays of storefronts on the ground floor (with various design in stone and metal); each storefront is separated by 1-story red granite piers with simple geometric capitals like the larger ones at the center of the facade. The 2nd floor has bands of clear-glass windows above dark-glass spandrels, projecting out slightly over the storefronts below. The regular curtain wall begins at the 3rd floor.

More storefront bays span along the ground floor of the north facade on 59th Street, with metal service doors at the far east end. The band of clear windows continues along the 2nd floor of the base. The south facade on 58th Street has two more bays of matching storefronts at each end, while the middle section has a wide, 3-bay restaurant storefront of paneled wood with a blue canvas awning surmounted by a band of metal-and-glass screening. An elaborate clock projects from the band about a third of the way from the east end. The window band of the 2nd floor continues all the way across the south facade. The north facade is organized into nine bays, the south has seven, and the west facade along the avenue has nine, although the middle three (at the main entrances) are much narrower.

There is a setback above the 6th floor at the eastern three bays of the south facade, and above the 7th floor at the two eastern bays of the north facade. The rest of the facades set back above the 9th floor. There are further setbacks around all three main facades every 1-2 floors near the top.

The ground floor is occupied by Jim's Shoe Repair, Just Plants by Juicepress, Macaron Cafe, Page & Smith opticians, Givenchy, Canali boutique, Eton boutique, Wolford boutique, Santoni shoes, Fratelli Rossetti shoes, and Lavo restaurant & nightclub.

In 2024, it was announced that the building is slated to be demolished.
