cooperative, apartment building
185-foot, 14-story early-modern cooperative-apartment building completed in 1959. It is clad in white brick above a ground floor of beige-painted stone with a low, black granite water table. The main entrance is at the center of the west facade on the avenue, with bronze-framed glass double-doors and wide sidelights surrounded by dark-green marble. Two windows, also with marble surrounds, flank the entry, which is covered by a rounded, green canvas canopy extending out over the sidewalk. Smaller display windows separate the two bronze-framed plate-glass storefronts on either side of the center section. The southern of the two storefronts on both sides is wider than the northern ones. A simple band course caps the base. On the north facade on 58th Street the water table is higher, stepping down as the site slopes down to the east. There are six bays with storefront windows; the two eastern bays are lower (again, due to the slope of the site), but are topped by white marble panels.
The upper floors on the west facade have seven bays, each with a tripartite window, although the middle three bays are narrower. A black metal air-conditioning vent is cut below each window group. On the north elevation there are six bays, with the eastern bay set further apart from the rest; these bays all have tripartite windows of the same size. Three of the middle bays have vents at each floor, while the other bays have only a few scattered vents (none at the west end bay). There is a setback above the 13th floor, with the penthouse floor set back above it.
A narrow section of the south elevation is exposed at the front, above the 3-story base of the neighboring Ritz Tower. It has one bay of tripartite windows. The building contains 62 apartments. The ground floor is occupied by Kvadrat Showroom, and Forum Gallery.
