art museum / art gallery, historical layer / disappeared object, commercial building

9-story Neo-Classical office building completed in 1921. Designed by Charles E. Birge, it is clad in limestone. The 2-story base has glass double-doors set in a double-height glass wall. Fluted end piers rising from grey granite plinths frame nearly the full height of the facade, up to the stone cornice above the 8th floor. The 3rd-7th floors have two fields of dark-tinted glass, both sub-divided into 4-over-3 panes on each floor (two rows of shorter panes with taller middle panes). The metal framing takes the shape of round-arches at the top of the 7th floor. The 8th floor, above a stone band course, has an arcade of six windows between stone piers. The recessed penthouse level at the 9th floor has orbs topping the end piers, and a peaked glass roof.
