The Pelican Island Causeway (Herbert E. Schmidt Causeway) is a Bascule (Scherzer rolling bascule lift) bridge over Pelican Island Channel built in 1960. The Bridge connects Seawolf Park Boulevard (on Pelican Island) to Pelican Island Boulevard (on Galveston Island). The bridge is eligible to be added to the national register of historic places.
On May 15, 2024 the bridge was hit by a barge when a tugboat pulling it lost control.
