This was a thriving community for many years with a water powered sawmill, turpentine mills, and a school. The Clark family settled in this area in the mid 1830's. During the 1900's, this area was clear cut of virgin pine and hardwood timber. There was a train system that carried logs to the sawmill at Browndell to the West, near Brookeland, Texas. There is still evidence of the old railroad grade. The community was located near two crossorads, the Henphill - Newton Road, and the Brookeland Road.
