The Blue Bar at the Algonquin Hotel (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 44th Street, 61
 bar, interesting place

3-story commercial building originally completed in the mid-1800s as a 2-story stable. It was purchased by the neighboring Algonquin Hotel in 1904, and given a third floor the next year. Over the years it has housed a barber shop, apartments, a supper club, a rehearsal studio, and several different restaurants. It is now occupied by The Blue Bar. This praised New York bar is a comfortable gathering spot for locals, visitors and business travelers alike, and a nightly meeting place for New York’s cultural and artistic elite. The Blue Bar first opened in 1933.

The facade is clad in grey-painted brick above a black cast-iron ground floor. There is a central entrance covered by a rounded, blue canvas canopy extending out over the sidewalk. The ground floor is capped by a dentiled cornice with two elaborate gold-colored brackets. The 2nd floor has a projecting bay window with seven narrow panes (and an angled pane at each side) divided by black iron mullions. It also has transom panes and is capped by a sloped metal roof. The 3rd floor has three joined, narrow double-windows, with transoms, in black iron framing. The facade is topped by a black metal roof cornice with console brackets and modillions.
