The Cathedral Spires are the most impressive group of spires in the Black Hills, and are a very popular climbing area.

Geologically, the spires area is an excellent example of joint-controlled weathering of granite, and is the only area of its kind in the upper Great Plains and northern Rocky Mountains. The formation is designated a National Natural Landmark together with a nearby stand of old-growth limber pine.
