Post-Dispatch Lake began as "Peninsular Lake", an irregular body of water that was popular with boaters and ice skaters. After the Panic of 1893, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch led a fundraiser to expand the lake. The work employed 6,000 for six months in 1894.
