Originally named "El Capitan" by the Spanish, the mountain was renamed "Pike's Peak" after Zebulon Pike Jr. who explored southern Colorado in 1806.

The mountain was further made famous by Katherine Lee Bates, who wrote a poem entitled "Pikes Peak" in 1895; a poem that eventually became the lyrics for the song "America the Beautiful".
