metallurgy, smelter
Southern Copper's La Caridad complex includes a smelter, electrolytic copper refinery, a precious metals refinery and a copper rod plant. Copper concentrates from La Caridad and Cananea mines are transported by road and truck to the smelter where they are processed and cast into copper anodes, then purified in the refinery as copper cathodes. The precious metals plant produces gold and silver frm the slimes recovered from the refining process. Sulphur dioxide off-gases collected from the plants are processed into sulphuric acid.
The smelter treats up to 1 million tons per year of concentrates to produce 300,000 tons of refined copper.
