International Monitoring System, infrasound monitoring site
Infrasound station IS56 is part of the International Monitoring System, which is designed for monitoring compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Installed in August 2002, the station employs an array of four sensing elements (H1-H4, spaced by at least 1 km) to monitor very-low-frequency acoustic waves that propagate hundreds or even thousands of kilometers. These elements are surrounded by well-developed forest, which helps shield them from wind noise. Aside from its main purpose of detecting atmospheric nuclear explosions, the array has been used to observe such natural phenomena as volcanic eruptions, bolides, and sudden stratospheric warming events.
