International Monitoring System, infrasound monitoring site
Infrasound station IS57 at Piñon Flats is part of the International Monitoring System, a global network of facilities for detecting violations of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Installed in 2001, the station employs an array of eight sensing elements to monitor low-frequency sound waves generated by nuclear blasts and various other phenomena (meteors, volcanoes, earthquakes, storms, landslides, sonic booms).
