According to legend, the town got its name from Thespiae Thespians from Athens (obviously the Athens city in Boeotia) and down to the true end of the word, of Erechtheus. Erechtheion (Goddess of height) was then a mountain pootamon mother and therefore also of Thespis (and Asopos). The Erechtheion is presented as one of the peaks of the massif of Mount Helicon.
