The Sivasagar tank was dug by Queen Ambika in 1734, in memory of her husband Swargadeo Sivasingha. The city of Sivasagar thus derives its name from this historic tank. It is the second largest man made lake in Assam after the nearby Joysagar tank.

Apart from its historical importance, the entire bank of the tank is of prime significance as it has the three Dols, most of the Govt. administrative offices, district prison, a church, a mosque, a buddhist monastery, two colleges, high schools, a museum, a tennis club, parks & gardens, etc.

There are three Dols (temples) situated on the banks of the tank are namely Siva Dol (Shiva Temple),Devi Dol (Durga Temple) & Bisnu Dol (Vishnu Temple).

Water level of this tank is higher than the town itself.
It is quite amazing that water level of this tank always remains the same irrespective to amount of rain throughout the year.

  • 'Sivasagar' tank is situated in Sivasagar district headquarters. The name is semantically adopted as place name at the level of District Name from a tank name. Prior to this excavation of this tank this area was known as 'Klongsupariya Gohain Gaon.' According to Changrung Phukanar Buranji, Draupadi, the second queen of Tai-Ahom king Sivasimha founded this tank sometimes in A.D. 1732 to commemorate her husband's name. So the tank and the name of the Hydronym. It measures about 400 + Bighas of land and the conscretion ceremony was conducted with more than hundred Brahmins so the tank is called 'Sagara'. Similar Tai-Ahom tanks are: Jaysagara to commemorate the name of Jayamati Konwari, mother of king Rudrasimha and wife of Gadadharsimha; Athaisagara, Lakhimisagara, Rudrasagara, Gaurisagara etc. Sivasagar was under the capital town of Rangpur @ Chemun, which was known in early time as -Tengabari, Meteka etc. The first queen of Sivasimha founded a Weaving School at this place which was later developed by Draupadi and third queen of Sivasimha Sarveswari. The banks are known as -Cherekapar, Kathpar, Dholiyapar etc. On the bank of the Sivasagar tank there are: Shiva Temple, Devi Temple and Vishnu Temple. Close to Sivasagar the other imporatant relics of Tai-Ahom rulers are: Jaydol, Jaysagar, Rangpur, Ranghghar, Talatalghar, Kharghar, Jayamati Moidam @ Phakua Dol, Bogi Dol and Pukhuri, Dubarani Ali, Hatikhok, Meteka Naosal, Thaora Dol, Rajmai Pukhuri, Bar Ali, An Underground Tunnel to river Dikhow from Talatal Ghar, etc. The vault of Independence War Hero Martyer Piyali Barphukan rests here. The Christian Missionary founded their Institution on the bank of this tank. A good numbers of Cannon belong to Tai-Ahom rule are still preserved on its bank. Today D.C's office, Inspector of School Office, District Jail etc rest on its bank.
  • Though most of the people claim that Joysagar is bigger than Sivsagar, but the length and breadth of both the tank does not support their claim. The comparison is as follows : Length - Sivsagar 780 m (2558 ft) and Joysagar 766 m (2512 ft) Breadth - Sivsagar 640 m (2098 ft) and Joysagar 604 m (1981 ft). Hence, I think Sivsagar should be considered as the largest man-made water body of Assam, and not the Joysagar.
  • In 1947 my parents came from America with a 6 month old baby to study Assamese for 2 years and lived in a home on this beautiful tank. I was then a 6 month old baby who was born in New York City. This was my first home in India. I was glad you mentioned the Christian Missionary Institution. My parents often spoke about how beautiful a place this was and I have an old picture. Are there still flying fish here? Tari (Beers) McGriff - guest
  • Dear Tari, I have been there quite a few times but now have not seen the flying fish. May be with human civilization it is no more visible.
