The Naval Arctic Research Laboratory (NARL) was established in 1947 by the Office of Naval Research. It is the only research laboratory of its kind in the high Arctic. It was managed by several contractors including the University of Alaska, Fairbanks which operated the lab from 1954 to 1980. The purpose of NARL was to provide facilities, logistical support, and services for scientists conducting basic and applied research in the Arctic in fields such as oceanography, underwater acoustics, atmospheric science, ice research, and aquatic and terrestrial biology. NARL supported numerous ice research stations and an animal research facility; and maintained a fleet of four aircraft, two research ships (the Alumiak and the Natchik) and several smaller boats for use in supporting research.
