    Syed Hilal Naqashbandi (RA) whose tomb is at Nesbal- 2 kms away from Asham is said to be a direct disciple of Kh. Bahu-ud- Din Naqashband. He lived a quiet life and passed away in 862 AH/ 1457 AD at ASHAM where he had settled down. However, he was buried at Nesbal. Syed Amin Awaisee commonly known as Wasi sahab, a disciple of Syed Hilal,was adopted as a son by Baihaqi Begum, daughter of Awrang Zeb the Great king of India, and wife of Zain-ul-Abadin, popularly known as Badshah, the king of Kashmir, but he lived a priestly life and like his spiritual master Syed Hilal led a life of retirement at Asham. When Syed Hilal died, he moved to Srinagar where he confined himself to a room near Kohi Maaraan. He, however, became a victim of political intrigue,when 15members of his family were killed in 889 A.H/ 1484 AD.He was buried at Alikadal Srinagar where his tomb exists to this day. Syed Amin [wasi Sahab] left no disciple. A khanqah was constructed at Asham by Zainul- Aabdin Budshah, the great King Of Kasnmir, but was later removed to Khawja Bazar,Srinagar in the memory of Khawaja Bahu-ud- Din Naqashband ( R A). However, there still exists a tomb at Asham in the memory of Syed Mohammad Amin called " Wasi Sahabun." situated on bank of river Jehlum..........the place is connected with rest of Sumbal Tehsil at 'Wasi Nalla', now by 220 metre long suspension bridge called Wassi Bridge. {Bashir Ahmad Parray Asham}

    Asham has, in the past, remained an important village amongst all the villages in the locality and had held a centric position in political as well as religious circles/ activities. As per legend there existed an Ashram here during Hindu ,as well as, Budhist eras where religious knowledge and teaching was imparted to the disciples/ pupil. Then during Muslim rule in Kashmir this place continued to remain hub of religious activties and earned great name and fame. Durig the regime of Sultan Zain-ul- Abidin @ "Budshah", a great saint Kh. Hilal Naqashbandi and his disciple Syed Amin Owaisi had had their abode here. After the death of Kh. Hilal, he was laid to rest at a near by village Nesbal. The king Budshah constructed a khankah at Asham where syed Amin Owaisi continued to worship and spread Islam. However, after his death he was buried at Ali-kadal Srinagar. It is also said that some of the Syeds,who had come to Kashmir with Mir Syed Ali Hamdani popularly known as Shah-Hamdan, and settled in the villages in and around the village Asham were buried at Asham- A in a grave-yard called"Syed Sahbun" However, for a long time the Pirs/ Priests of the village remained inactive and restricted their activities to "Imamat"( leading prayers in the mosques) only and most ot them shifted their profession to cultivation/ zamindari. Of late, in the seventies some of learned youth were inclined to the religious organisation "Jamat-i-Islami "and actively took part in propagation of Islam and opened an Islamic High School in the village.Notable among the youth included Syed Ashraf Shah Bukhari, Ghulam Muhammad Khan and Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, all highly qualifoed.

    The people of Asham, like other kashmiris,are unpredictable.They have forgotten their past and are busy with making their personal fortunes and future and nobody is bothered about others.They even least care about the development of their village infrastructure.The village is underdeveloped as compared to other villages of the Tehsil, not to speak of District.It is said here,as elders would tell,that the village is "Born-without-father", meaning there by that there has been no "Village Head" ever available in the village.

    Asham js both underdeveloped and politically a neglected village. Underdevelopment is an economic term often used to refer economic development,symptoms of which include lack of access to job opportunities, health care, drinking water, food, education and housing. These ae the basic indicators of development. The educated unemployment has increased in village Asham many fold and only a handful of educated youth have made it to enter Government jobs for one or the other reasons. Rest are either unemployed or under-employed. Hundreds of educated youth are now seeking their livelihood by doing menial jobs like extraction of sand from river Jehlum .Health care and drinkig water facilities are not available to the majority of population as per requirement. Other factors like education,food and housing though available in the village are not of quality . It is a bitter truth that despite being a big village and in close visciniy to the tehsil headquarter and capital of the state,Asham has remained underdevelopment.

    The village Asham is in the vicinity of famous Manasbal Lake which is located about 30 km north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir State. It has predominantly rural surroundings with three villages, Kondabal, Jarokbal and Gratbal overlooking the lake. Manasbal Lake is considered as the 'supreme gem of all Kashmir lakes' with lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) nowhere more abundant or beautiful than on the margins of this lake during July and August. Manasbal Lake is the deepest lake of Kashmir valley and perhaps the only one that develops stable summer stratification. Manasbal Lake is classified as warm monomictic lake and circulates once in a year for a short time. The other lakes in the region either have weak stratification or are polymictic. Close to the northern shore are the ruins of a fort which was built in 17th century by a Moghul king to cater the needs of caravans that used to travel from Panjab to Srinagar On the south, overlooking the lake is a hillock-Ahtung which is used for limestone extraction. The eastern part is mainly mountainous and towards the north is an elevated plateau known as 'Karewa' consisting of lacustrine, fluviatile and loessic deposits. The Manasbal Lake has no major inflow channels and the water supply is maintained through spring water inflow and precipitation. An outlet channel connects the lake with the Jhelum River near village Asham. The outflow of water is regulated artificially. The local population uses the Manasbal Lake as a source of water, for fishing and for obtaining food and fodder plants. Many people are involved in harvesting and marketing of lotus rootstocks which are extensively eaten in the State. In recent years, tourism has caught up with the Manasbal Lake in a big way and as a consequence there are lots of pressure on the terrestrial ecosystem which is being exploited at many places. The origin of the lake is still unresolved but there is no denying the fact that Manasbal Lake is very ancient. The local people believe in the legend that the Manasbal Lake is bottomless. manasbal lake is the deepest lake of kashmir and known for its beauty , jammu and kashmir tourism online offers special kashmir tours which include visit to manasbal

    The Village Safapora is the populas Village adjacent to Village Asham. Having about 60% literacy level, has produced some good teachers, engineers and some doctors ; but not bureaucrats or politician. Village Safapora is situated on the foothills of Baladar mountain, locally called, "Krushu" upto Asham Waddar, situated on the north of Manasbal lake. It is really a beautiful village and once holding a dominating influence in the area' (baparray}
