    Probably mining pits or natural oil deposits.

    These are just natural solt lakes, one can see salt masses on the coasts of some of them. Black color was got by optical filtering :)

    This 'Place' of the Gobi dessert is only visible at z=7 & 8. Looking closely at the dune patterns is quite spectacular!
